26-year-old actor Matt Smith was anointed as the eleventh Doctor Who this week. If you were in charge of casting, who would you cast as your ideal Doctor and why?

Same as many people I've discussed this with: first choice would have been Bill Nighy, or Anthony Head. I wished Tennant would have stayed one more year though, just to see him working under a different head writer *sigh*

Oh well, these things were not meant to be *shrug* I find it hard to get excited about Matt Smith, but that's mostly because I'm not familiar with his work, and hopefully he'll amaze us all in the role ;-)

12th Doctor - Anthony Stewart Head

Bill or Anthony would've been my two choices.

I know! And funnily enough, most of my friends off lj were in agreement as well. But then none of us is a teen anymore, and I guess they would have hesitated before taking anyone clearly older than DT precisely because kids/teenagers are considered the core audience *sigh*

On the other hand, I read other people mention Ian McKellen but, as much as I adore him, it doesn't seem as obvious to me, but I can't put my finger on why :s

Well Team Cardiff claim an older actor wouldn't be suitable because of all the running and what not - which seems to me to be an excuse for lazy writing...

Oh - no, definitely can't see Ian McKellen in the role.

Totally agree there - besides, isn't that the point? To make the Doctors different....and if my memory serves me well, it was one of the oldest actors in the role (Pertwee) who made the Doctor more athletic, as THEIR OWN SHOW POINTED OUT *whistle and tap foot angrily*

THANK YOU! (Randomly looking over the answers). I thought Bill Nighy or Anthony Head would have been BRILLIANT.

But fewer new pre-teen viewers would watch then :[ So of course they are going to get someone who will draw them in. I'm just annoyed that he looks a lot like David in some ways u__u

And Matt Smith's works? http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1741002/ The kid has barely done anything. Siiigh.

Pretty much my thoughts re: the pre-teen/teens viewers.

I'm not too worried with Matt Smith's limited body of work though - we all have to begin somewhere ;-) No matter how much or how little he has done, a good actor remains a good actor - of course, how good his Doctor is going to be will also depend on the quality of the scripts and story arcs *bite nails*
