Getting somewhere

June 3rd, 2009 (01:25 pm)
drained

current location: Home
current mood: drained
current song: LOTR - The Two Towes OST

I am slowly getting over my deception at not getting to watch [二重裁判] - btw, thanks to everyone who's expressed their sympathy at LJ or elsewhere - yes, I know, it's not as if it was even remotely important in the greater scheme of things, but I was really, really looking forward to it

Did manage to finish all the stuff that I wanted to do for other people, that is a) the first article (covering Neolithic to Shang Dynasty) in a series introducing Chinese History to beginners (it's very academic though - it's not that I don't want to make them fun, I am just not good enough of a writer to know how. I am planning to post it on my own site a little jazzed up with map and pictures though) and b) scanned Shel'tter and uploaded it. It was a real battle with my scanner but we made it through, whoohoo! Now to scan Marie-Claire Japan's February issue (although I'll probably start with the scanning of another Kato photoshoot, due to....popular demand! Who would have guessed? Now if only the people who are running his website would take their cue and alter the sign up process to allow people living outside Japan to join)

On the other hand I'm late on everything else I wanted to do since last week (although I have watched part 3 of North and South....and can't WAIT to see part 4 now *bite nails*). I thought I could start making up for lost time yesterday but a headache made sure I wouldn't - just managed to upload Shel'tter before crawling to bed. At least I'm feeling better now so there's hope I can get at least a glimpse of all the DVDs I received last Saturday, especially since my last Amazon order has apparently arrived in Geneva as well, meaning I'll probably get that by tomorrow on top of everything else

PS: am now home for lunch and discovered I had already received the Yakuza Papers box set which I think I've ordered from the US about ten days ago!!!!! I can hardly believe they've been so fast, but definitely good news there *g* Now, to finish watching all six movies in the Sasori series before watching all five movies (plus one dvd full of extras) included in this box.....well, at least I won't get bored anytime soon, that's for sure!

PS2 (EDIT): Congratulations are in order for Masaya Kato as it has just been announced that he's landed the lead in the Japanese movie "Sakura Sakura" which, if I got that correctly, will be a biopic on Japanese chemist (who spent a good part of his life in America) Jokichi Takamine. Original article is here

Yes, a big congrats to Masaya Kato! Huzzah! (And please do scan another Kato photoshoot; you'll make people, myself included, very happy :-).
Oooh, almost up to the end with North & South, eh? Be interested to hear your thoughts when you've finished it. You still haven't managed to see episode one yet, right?

Will do, will do - should have a new one up before the end of this week ;-)

I've also just received my Amazon pack which includes "The 1750 Terrible Days", in which Masaya was 20something - one of his earliest movies anyway (his debut was in "Shiro and Marylin" in 1988, and this one was made in the very early 1990s). I'll try to post screencaps of that asap as well

No, it's amazing how difficult it is to actually get my hands on the first episode. I didn't want to download it because, well, except for movies/series which are really hard to find on DVD, I try to avoid downloading (I know it probably makes me sound terribly old school, but I'm actually quite ok with the principle of paying to listen to a CD or to watch a movie.....). Maybe I'll just have to wait until I place an order with Amazon UK.....at any rate, something I loved in episode 3 was the whole Exhibition part. I am endlessly fascinated with how people used to represent the world and history according to the knowledge of the time. Also the dialogue there was particularly good and sharp, cleverly tying this scene and the reaction of the visitors to the rest of the story

Bring on part 4 already!!!!!

Ooh, a young Kato. That'll be interesting! He seems to have settled extremely well into middle age; it's hard to imagine him with puppy fat ;-).

It is old school, but no less laudable for that! I like to support the artist(s) where possible myself, which explains why I have so very books and DVDs. But I am stuck on dial-up and therefore can't actually download anything substantial myself, so it's something of an academic question ;-).
I thought the exhibition scene in N&S was fascinating myself. I've always been interested in old maps and things like that, and this is taking it one step further. I wonder if someone's ever made a study of the history of museums and exhibition styles? (Surely they have.)

To be honest, he was cute (even cuter than cute in Shiro and Marilyn), but I think he's much better looking now :p I'll try to post some on occasion....in the meanwhile, I have new photoshoot pictures up in my latest post, just in case you're interested *whistle*

I'm not familiar with general books on the history of museums, but I know there are at least some by country (I've recently come across one on Japanese museums and the representation of their history during the Meiji era).

I don't know if you've ever been to London, but one thing you would love is the Enlightment Room at the British Museum which is doing just that: it's an immense room that stands the way it would have been in the 18th-early 19th century and which does a great job at showing us how people saw and understood the world at the time. I have a whole book about it and have taken many photographies when in London so let me know if you're interested :-)

I have been to London only once, six years ago, but will undoubtedly be going again sometime in the future, so the Enlightment Room is definitely something for me to look out for then. And by all means, post some select photos; I think it sounds fascinating! And I have indeed noticed your latest post, so I shall peruse the undoubtedly lovely pictures ASAP (that's a very sensible warning cut you've put on that post, BTW ;-).
