current song: A Banquet - Goemon OST

So sorry I went AWOL for almost two weeks, but I caught a cold. In June. After I went through winter without even sneezing *sigh* I just CAN'T do things the way normal people do, it seems. It was pretty nasty and for all I know, it might have been Swine flu. If it was though, it doesn't seem I've passed it on to anyone. I have a good idea when I caught whatever I got, and after that I've only been with colleagues and a few friends, and haven't been in close quarters with other people until I was really ill, and the couple of people I know who also got ill actually became so before me. Anyway, whatever it was, I must have had a touch of hay fever thrown in the mix, because I would feel worse at my workplace (my eyes start to sting, my nose runs constantly, etc.) and I know from experience there must be something growing there that I'm more sensitive to, as I've had hay fever symptoms at work around this time of the year since I've been there. And of course, the whole thing would block my sinuses which led to heachache after headache.....

Anyway, I'm better now. I've managed to scan the whole of Madame Figaro Japan February issue which is in answer to a few requests made over at [info]jmagazinescans - I just need to photoshop the lot and upload it, so the matter of a couple of days, normally *fingers crossed* Started also taking screencaps from Red Cliff part 1 which I have now seen two times; I must say I've come to really love Nakamura Shidou (Japanese kabuki and movie actor) in this: he just has these great facial expressions that had me laugh and want to hug him simultaneously. Generally speaking, I found the generals more entertaining than the leads (I think John Woo seriously overindulged in his "men coming together" fetish to the point that it becomes distracting in the middle section of the movie) with the exception of Chang Chen who has a more complex character and plays the nuances well

I've also seen Female Prisoner #701 - Jailhouse 41 again which I'll probably review right after Red Cliff part 1. And I've seen the last part of North and South over on BBC Four and must say it was one great episode! I know I owe [info]salimbol to write at least some details about it but it will come in another post - it's already getting pretty late :p

Another thing that I'll owe her and quite a few other people are more Masaya Kato pics - I WILL get to it, in fact I *am* getting to it *hint hint* especially since I have more dvds coming in over the next couple of weeks AND he'll be in a new tv show starting next week already (in a guise we haven't been used to see him in so far, as he warned in his blog. Unfortunately I don't have any good quality picture to show, but let's just say that when I saw a tiny illustration of what he meant by that, I spit my tea all over the keyboard :p). Now let's hope that KeyHole TV does its job this time around and that I actually get to see it when it is broadcasted on TV Tokyo *shake fist*

Manga - OHSHC - Haruhi - WTF

Wa ha ha ha! Okay, I was definitely NOT expecting that in the picture! :-)
Sorry to hear you've been sick! I've been sick myself, and it's no fun, that's for sure (though it's winter here, so it's only to be expected). And no pressure with any North & South comments you choose to make (though I will be very interested in what you have to say ;-).

I've just read your journal entry: I am sorry you've been unwell too - what a pair we make, LOL

The thing that fascinated me the most in the last episode (apart from the resolution of the love story, of course *g* I mean, the last minutes *dreamy*) is the social commentary/economic background and it struck me how relevant the whole episode was, particularly in regard with what has happened over the last two years now. I mean, here is a man who refuses to take a risk and gamble the factory, his employees' wages, etc on a financial montage which is, as many comment, highly risky. The beauty of the thing is that you *know* he's right, but he still loses. But he's still right and don't you just wish there had been more Mr. Thornton at the head of big banking institutes/insurances/multinational companies (and I am not referring to looks here, although that would definitely be a bonus :p)

And yeah, that picture *g* It's not from that new show next week but from a comedy series he did two years ago. Not the greatest series in the world by any means, but he himself excels in a comedy role (which doesn't come as a surprise if you've seen some of his press conferences/tv shows appearances - why he isn't asked to do comedy more often I have no idea). Mind you he does look dashing most of the time (even when he gets hit by his ex-wife or any nurse working at the hospital), but there are some occasions when he does things like that ^ And that's tame compared to his guise in ep 2 *whistle*

North & South - Walking

*sigh* more sickness, more delay. Gomen!
it struck me how relevant the whole episode was, particularly in regard with what has happened over the last two years now.
Goodness me, you're right, actually. I often don't think to relate what happens in period dramas with the here and now (though I'll think about how accurately they're portraying historical events, of course), but I really should, more often. Yeah, the world would be a better place with Mr Thorntons (in so many ways *grin*). But it seems doomed to a remarkably short memory, alas.
As for Masaya Kato: man, I need to see more behind-the-scenes stuff with him! Well, I need to see more stuff with him in it, period, but I don't think I've really seen anything with him being himself.

Thanks dear! I just hate with a passion how it cuts into the time I wanted to take to read/watch (stingy eyes and headaches are not really allowing you to do any of that) :s Well, you know what I mean, LOL

Hi! I've seen your posts at [info]bamboo_house and have added MANY films to my Netflix queue thanks to your wonderful screen-captures! Is it alright for me to add you as a friend? I also love Asian history, particularly dealing with Japan and Korea. I am also an enormous fan of samurai movies. In fact, I'm pretty sure my friends list is tired of reading about Toshiro Mifune and Tatsuya Nakadai. :x Anyway, hi! My name is Jen! :)

Ok, first I must say your icon is totally made of squee!

I would be very happy to be added by you as a friend and would like to friend back if that's ok?

And wow! Well, thank you for your comment, it's actually very humbling - I hope you are enjoying/will enjoy them *s* There are so many movies, both old and new, to share/talk about.... I must say I've only been seriously into Eastern Asia cinema since about two years or so ago, so there's still a lot of catching up I need to do (but hey, that's actually the fun part, so not complaining :p); I'd love to read your thoughts about the movies you've seen ^-^

I'm very much into Asian history as well (history as a whole really, but Eastern Asia in particular): the lack of information on some periods of Japanese history in languages other than Japanese is actually one of the main reasons that motivated me to learn that language...I have only studied modern history at university though, so for everything else, I am very much an (enthusiastic) laywoman *g*

Haha! Honestly, I flail in shameless fangirl fashion ALL OVER my journal about Toshiro Mifune. I am actually one update away from posting screen caps from the "waterfall" scene in Seven Samurai. :fans self:

I've been watching foreign films off and on for a few years, but only started watching Asian cinema a few months ago, (thanks to my boyfriend who insisted that I see Sword of Doom <3) I can't wait to exchange thoughts (and squee/flailing) over Asia and movies!

Up until last year, I was working on a PhD in History. After 8 years of studying history in an academic setting, however, I'd grown disillusioned with academic life and quit. I studied American History in grad school, but as an undergrad had to take a variety of history courses including a class in Japanese history. LOVED IT! I haven't learned Japanese, unfortunately. Is it difficult? And agreed on the lack of sources for Asian history. I was appalled by the lack of academic texts on Korean history! Of course, the only thing I have access to are texts in English! :(

Sorry for the lengthy comment. I am so excited!! I will add you right away!
